Midwest Radio is the local radio station for County Mayo. In July 1989, it became the first local radio station on air in Ireland and has become a phenomenon in broadcasting terms across the west of Ireland.
Midwest Radio operates from studios in Ballyhaunis, Ballina and Castlebar and offers radio listeners a range of programming across all age genres and interests. The station is very much at the ‘heart’ of Mayo and its current affairs and local news broadcasts keep the people of the county up-to-date on what is happening.
With a host of programmes that include arts, farming, culture, religion and so much more the station is a true reflection of what Mayo is like today and its team of professional broadcasters and producers deliver a programme schedule that is second-to-none.
Light entertainment and local sports coverage is very much to the fore of what Midwest Radio does and its ethos of entertaining, educating and informing its listeners remains as strong today as it did back in 1989.
Managing Director Paul Claffey – a recent recipient of the PPI Hall of Fame Award – continues to navigate the station through the many changes within the broadcast industry and remains and enthusiastic and committed to the cause as he was 34 years ago!
With a state-of-the-art Outside Broadcast Unit at its disposal Midwest Radio prides itself in being part of the community across the entire county as we continue to be part of the tapestry of county Mayo.
Listenership has remained exceptionally strong for over three decades with in a Yesterday Listened figure consistently above 60% and an equally impressive Market Share that has always been well in excess of 55%.
The station remains focussed and determined to continue to be the voice of County Mayo!
